21st London  (1st Surrey Rifles) arrived in France in March 1915 as part of 142 Brigade, 47th Division. After a period of trench training they took over a section of the line at Rue L’Epinette near Le Touret in northern France. On 5th May, 1915 they moved into the front line here in a sub-sector known as ‘Indian Village’. The Battalion Diary has no mention of any casualties on this day but the records show that it was the day that Sergeant Edgar Webb was killed in action, most likely from enemy shell fire.
